Practice blog: TOEFL Preparation Tips

It’s almost always stressful to take the TOEFL. You must achieve a certain score. The test costs a significant amount of money to take. You’ve spent months getting ready. The testing facility could be crowded or noisy. Perhaps you had a restless night’s sleep the night before. There is nothing you can do to change any of those, but starting your TOEFL preparation early is one of the best things you can do to lessen your stress on test day. Here are 10 strategies I’ve found to be useful for TOEFL preparation:

  1. Get familiar with the format
  2. Get the official materials
  3. Follow a plan
  4. Read English books
  5. Listen to podcasts
  6. Become a good note taker
  7. Practice speaking
  8. Practice writing
  9.  Take the practice tests
  10. Learn to manage time

1. Get familiar with the format

Spend some time on the TOEFL website to familiarize yourself with how it operates and to gather any information you require. Be aware that there are two test-taking options available to you: the paper-based test and the internet-based test (or iBT). The former is probably what you’ll do because it’s currently lot more common. However, here is how each is presented just in case.

2. Get the official materials

Buy the three official books of TOEFL from ETS.

a. Official Guide TOEFL iBT 6th Ed

b. Official TOEFL iBT Vol 1 4th Ed

c. Official TOEFL iBT Vol 2 4th Ed

3. Follow a plan

A good routine always helps to get the best preparation for any exam. Just make a good routine and stick to it.

4. Read English books

Read books everyday. Find a topics you like. Get some books on these topic and read regularly. This will help you in the reading section.

5. Listen to podcasts

Listening to podcasts help to improve listening skills. If you don’t like listening to podcasts, try watching movies or tv shows without subtitles.

6. Become a good note taker

Taking notes while listening to lectures and conversations is the most important strategy to get a high score in the listening section. Be a good note taker. Don’t try to write down everything you are listening. Write down the keywords of new information.

7. Practice speaking

Speaking is the most important section of the TOEFL test. Make sure to practice speaking everyday. Record your own response while practicing and listen to it again and again to find out the flaws. Then try to work on them.

8. Practice writing

Many people often does not pay much attention to this section and end up getting a poor score in the writing. To improve your score, work on your grammar, sentence structures and follow a template.

9. Take the practice tests

This is the most important thing you can follow to ace the test. The three official books have 14 practice sets. Make sure to take all of them before your test day. Don’t waste your time on third party materials.

10. Learn to manage time

Even if your preparation is good, you might be struggling with time management, which will lower your score. Therefore, while taking the practice test, make sure to finish the tests on time.
